Tableware for Two
Introduction
For years I’d wanted to make plates for the cottages at Il Baciarino, but I was blocked—inspired by too many possibilities, overwhelmed by ideas, afraid that after all the work I might ruin a set in the glazing or firing. But here's what I've learned: the moment I make a decision and get clear on what I want, it becomes surprisingly easy to actually create.
Tableware for Two (June 12 - 21, 2026) is born from that breakthrough. This retreat is a playful yet rigorous look at making functional work for the table, but it's also an invitation to move through your own creative blocks with intention and support. Whether you're paralyzed by Pinterest possibilities or ready to finally create that matching set you've been dreaming about, we'll work together to clarify your vision and bring it into being.
In this intimate class of six, you'll have the space and individual attention to develop not just technical skills, but confidence in making design decisions that feel authentically yours. We'll explore what it means to create objects meant for regular, personal use—pieces that will hold more than food, but also connection and the quiet everyday moments that make a life beautiful.
Content
Wheel throwing and hand building demonstrations, drawing exercises, and form exploration will all be key components of this 10 day retreat.
We will investigate what it means to make objects for the table; the balance between aesthetics and functionality, and the design needed for objects intended for regular and personal use.
A visit to the village’s Etruscan museum will be a source of inspiration for our making, as will be trips off the property to the beach, and the old town centres.
We will finish off this course with a firing of the wood burning kiln, with thoughtful and playful loading considerations. We will strategize to best take advantage of the ash and flame path.
Prerequisites
This course is suitable for beginners who are just getting started and want to dive right into the deep end, or seasoned makers who are looking for more intentionality and mastery in their practice.
Food and Relaxation
We will indulge ourselves in the best that Tuscany has to offer. Three meals a day, Italian style. Our meals are based on the freshest local and home grown ingredients, prepared with that light Italian touch. Dinners will begin with an aperitivo, there will be wine at each lunch and dinner, and a ‘digestive’ will round things out (there are always non-alcoholic options, and all of it’s included in the price)
But not only will we eat, we’ll also learn how some of it’s done! Try your hand at our ricotta gnocchi or gnudi. Learn the tricks of a terrific tiramisu. And make your own wood-fired pizza from scratch. You’ll be able to go home and impress your friends with more than your ceramics!
Several local trips will round out our enjoyment of Italy.
Cost
For the 10 days, the retreat costs €2,300 and includes: all meals and drinks, all trips and tastings, all tools and materials, train station pick-up and drop-off. (It does not include shipping your work home.)
Accommodations
Accommodations are priced separately and are available on a first come, first serve basis. These are the options:
La Medea is for the romantics with its hammock in the trees and fairy lit bedroom. It has a queen bed and large deck space. €990
La Rondine, located right next to the studios, boasts a queen bed, huge floor to ceiling windows, and a sweet little loft. €1260
La Pesca, located at the top of the property, is a house that up to 4 artists share. It has a huge deck and an open space main area with kitchen, dining table and couch. There are two upper bedrooms with single beds that share a bathroom - €540 for each upper bedroom. The two lower bedrooms share a bathroom and each have a double bed - €675 for each lower bedroom.
Before deciding, I highly recommend having a look at the location - Il Baciarino - where the retreats are held either via their instagram or website. It’s truly spectacular.
